Why This Choice Matters at 35 Agility

The 35–40 bracket is short but pivotal. You unlock the Barbarian Outpost course at exactly 35, and Varrock Rooftop has been available since 30. By 40, both courses become obsolete as you move to Canifis for marks or stay at Barbarian for Strength XP if you value it. The hours you spend here determine whether you enter the mid-game with full Graceful or with a few extra Strength levels.

For ironmen, the Marks of Grace tradeoff is heavier: without the Grand Exchange, Graceful is the only untradeable weight-reducing set you can reliably earn, and run energy restoration from the full set is invaluable for questing, farming, and clue scrolls. New mains can buy stamina potions and food, but still benefit from Graceful’s weight reduction. So the decision isn’t just about XP—it’s about account trajectory.

Requirements and Unlocks

Before you click a single obstacle, make sure you meet the entry conditions for each course.

Requirements Box
  • Barbarian Outpost Agility Course – 35 Agility, completion of Alfred Grimhand’s Barcrawl miniquest
  • Varrock Rooftop Course – 30 Agility (already have it by 35), no quest required

Completing Barcrawl is a short trek to several pubs across Gielinor. It’s easy to forget and can be a frustrating detour if you’re already at the course entrance. The course itself is located in the Barbarian Outpost, north-west of Seers’ Village and south of the Barbarian Assault minigame. The map below shows the layout and the eight obstacles you’ll cycle through.

At 35 Agility, you also unlock the Horror from the Deep quest, which gives access to the prayer book. Varrock Rooftop has no quest requirement, so the tradeoff is immediate: one extra step versus a cleaner start.

Inside the Barbarian Outpost Course

The Barbarian Outpost course consists of eight obstacles that must be completed in order. Each lap awards 153.3 Agility experience and 41.3 Strength experience upon completion. You can fail some obstacles, taking small amounts of damage that scale with your current Hitpoints—so lower HP means less damage per failure, and you should avoid eating until your health is low.

With a tick-perfect cycle, a lap takes about 32 seconds, translating to around 18,400 Agility XP per hour at maximum efficiency. Realistically, at level 35–40 with normal concentration, expect 11,000–14,000 Agility XP per hour. The Strength XP adds roughly 5,000 Strength XP per hour—a meaningful bonus for low-level accounts that need melee stats.

Obstacle Walkthrough

The course runs clockwise. Here are the obstacles you’ll face, with common failure points.

  • Rope swing – A simple swing over water. Fail and you’ll splash down.
  • Log balance – Cross a narrow log. Agility level affects success, but the chance is high at 35+.
  • Net wall – Climb a net. Low chance of failure, but you can fall.
  • Balancing ledge – Walk along a narrow ledge. One of the riskier obstacles early.
  • Crumbling wall – Climb over a broken wall; failure sends you back a step.
  • Rope swing (second) – Another rope, but slightly longer.
  • Ladder – Climb down a ladder. Almost never failed.
  • Pipe crawl – Squeeze through a pipe to return to the start.

Varrock Rooftop and the Graceful Tradeoff

Varrock Rooftop Course is a stark contrast: no Strength XP, no failures, and a steady drip of Marks of Grace. Marks are the currency used to purchase the Graceful outfit from Grace in the Rogues’ Den. The full set weighs 0 kg in total and reduces weight by 25 kg when worn, plus increases run energy restoration rate by 30%.

Mark of Grace
A Mark of Grace, the real reason many players choose Varrock. View on wiki

Marks of Grace are not awarded at Barbarian Outpost. If you spend 35–40 at Barbarian, you’ll have zero marks toward Graceful. You can start earning marks later at Canifis (from 40), but those early marks from Varrock would have been “free” progress. For ironmen, Graceful is almost mandatory for efficient questing and skilling, so skipping marks at this bracket means a longer grind later.

Varrock’s exact XP per lap and marks per hour should be verified on the wiki, as they change with level and are not listed in this guide. However, most players find Varrock slightly less Agility XP per hour than a focused Barbarian session, but the relaxed nature and mark income often make it the better value for time.

AFK vs Efficient Training Strategies

Barbarian Outpost can be trained two ways:

  • Laid-back / semi-AFK: Click each obstacle when your character finishes, without worrying about tick-perfect movement. Expect 11,000–14,000 Agility XP/hr. This uses less attention but more run energy because you’ll be walking between obstacles if you don’t manually path.
  • Efficient / tick-perfect: Manually click to run to specific tiles between obstacles, reducing lap time to around 32 seconds. This boosts XP to 18,400 Agility XP/hr and requires constant clicking and energy management. You’ll need stamina potions or frequent energy restoration to maintain.

Varrock Rooftop is inherently more AFK: the obstacles are close together and most are single clicks with no failure chance. You can chat, watch a video, or play on mobile while training. The marks of grace also encourage a steady, low-effort loop. If you value your attention, Varrock wins hands down.

Tip: Bring weight-reducing clothing (spotted/spottier cape, boots of lightness, etc.) and keep your total weight at 0 kg or lower. This drastically slows run energy drain and makes both courses more forgiving.

Supplies and Ironman-Specific Planning

For Barbarian Outpost, you need:

  • Food – Any food to heal failure damage. Because damage scales with current HP, eat only when below ~10-15 HP to conserve food. Lobsters or better are fine for mains; ironmen can use cakes or stews from early quests.
  • Energy restoration – Stamina potions for mains are ideal. Ironmen without herblore can use energy potions (harralander + chocolate dust) or simply walk parts of the lap. Weight reduction helps more than energy potions at this level.
  • Weight-reducing gear – Boots of lightness (from Temple of Ikov, requires 25 Agility), spotted/spottier capes, and any other pieces you have. No Graceful yet, but even a few pieces cut energy drain significantly.

For Varrock, food is unnecessary (no failures), but energy potions or weight reduction still help because you’ll be running constantly. Ironmen should prioritize making energy potions if possible; otherwise, walk when low and let run energy regenerate. The agility skill itself speeds up regeneration, so it gets easier as you level.

Ironman accounts should also consider early money makers from the Free-to-play Ironman guide: collecting steel platelegs, ruby rings, or gold bars can fund energy potions or buy materials for herblore. On a main account, buying a few stamina potions off the Grand Exchange is trivial, but ironmen need to plan their resource gathering.

Run Energy Math: Agility level directly reduces run energy drain rate and increases regeneration. At 35 Agility, you’ll notice a difference from level 1, but not as much as at 70+. Every level matters, so the XP you gain here also improves your future movement.

Time-to-Goal: From 35 to 40

Level 35 requires 22,406 total XP; level 40 requires 37,224 XP. The gap is 14,818 Agility XP. Using the rates above:

  • Barbarian Outpost, laid-back (11,000–14,000 XP/hr): 1.1–1.35 hours
  • Barbarian Outpost, efficient (18,400 XP/hr): 0.8 hours
  • Varrock Rooftop (verify exact XP/hr on wiki; typically similar or slightly less than Barbarian laid-back): roughly 1.2–1.5 hours but you bank marks of grace.
MethodAgility XP/hrStrength XP/hrMarks of Grace?Attention LevelTime to 40 (from 35)
Barbarian Outpost (chill)11k–14k~5kNoMedium – click each obstacle1.1–1.35 hrs
Barbarian Outpost (tick-perfect)18.4k~5kNoHigh – constant clicks and pathing0.8 hrs

If you’re after raw Speed, Barbarian tick-perfect wins, but that assumes you never miss a tick and have infinite run energy. Most players will fall somewhere in between. The table is a guide, not a promise—always verify current Varrock rates on the wiki.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  • Forgetting Barcrawl – You can’t enter the Barbarian course without it. Do the miniquest first.
  • Not bringing food – Failures happen, even at 35 Agility. A few pieces of food prevent a trip to Lumbridge.
  • Eating at full HP – Failure damage scales with current HP, so eating at full HP wastes food and doesn’t reduce risk. Only eat when low.
  • Ignoring weight – Heavy armor drains run energy fast. Wear nothing or light gear.
  • Choosing Barbarian for AFK – Barbarian is not AFK; it’s click-intensive. If you want low attention, Varrock is better.
  • Overvaluing Strength XP – The Strength XP is nice, but at higher levels you’ll get more Strength XP from combat training. Marks of Grace have no equivalent fast source.
  • Not banking marks early – If you plan to get Graceful eventually, every mark from Varrock now reduces later grind.

Warning: If you choose Barbarian Outpost for 35–40, you will have zero Marks of Grace from this stretch. The Canifis Rooftop Course at 40 offers marks, but you’ll need to spend extra hours there later. For ironmen, this can delay your Graceful set by several hours.

When Buying Gold or a Boost Is the Honest Shortcut

Time is the real currency in Old School RuneScape. If you’re a main account with limited playtime, buying gold to fund stamina potions, food, and weight-reducing items (like the spottier cape if you don’t have it) can save hours of resource gathering. A few hundred thousand GP covers dozens of stamina doses and lets you use Barbarian’s efficient method without worrying about energy. This is a legitimate way to remove the supply bottleneck.

For those who absolutely hate clicking obstacles, a leveling service is another option. Services that train your Agility from 35 to 40 (or beyond) exist, but be aware that account sharing is against Jagex rules and carries risk. GP Trillionaire does not encourage rule-breaking; however, if you value your time above all else, many players choose to outsource the grind. Always use a trusted provider and understand the consequences.

Honest Take: Buying a few stamina potions or a small gold stack to cover supplies is the most practical shortcut. You still do the training yourself, but you skip the boring GP earning. If you want to go further, a boost service can handle the clicking while you’re at work—just know the risks.

Next Steps After 40

Once you hit 40 Agility, your options expand:

  • Canifis Rooftop Course – Unlocks at 40 and is the best source of Marks of Grace until Seers’ Village at 60. Many players camp here from 40–60 for full Graceful.
  • Stay at Barbarian Outpost – If you want more Strength XP and fast Agility XP, you can continue here until 52+ or move to the Wilderness course at 52 (with its own risks).
  • Quest unlocks – 40 Agility is required for Royal Trouble and The Fremennik Isles, so you’re now eligible.
  • Shortcuts – Check the Agility page for shortcuts that opened at 35–40; several are in Kandarin and Asgarnia.

Your decision at 35–40 sets the tone for mid-game. Choose Barbarian for efficiency and Strength, or Varrock for Graceful progress. Both are valid; just know what you’re trading.
