Fire Strike — OSRS Wiki

For free-to-play accounts, Magic is the only fast travel option outside of walking. No teleport tablets exist in F2P, so unlocking Varrock, Lumbridge, and Falador teleports transforms how you move around the game. But grinding from level 1 to 55 is a serious time sink, and two training methods dominate the conversation: Fire Strike on safespotted monsters like dark wizards, and Curse splashing on a trapped creature while wearing full metal armour.

Fire Strike is a combat spell that gives base XP plus damage XP, and it can be autocast with a staff of fire. Curse is a non-combat debuff that gives flat XP per cast, but requires manual clicking and intentionally negative magic accuracy so every cast splashes. Both have tradeoffs in cost, attention, and speed. This guide compares them with realistic expectations, supplies, and a clear path to 55 Magic.

Who This Guide Is For & Requirements

This guide is for free-to-play accounts that want an efficient route to 55 Magic. You may be planning to buy membership and start High Level Alchemy immediately, or you may just want stronger combat spells and teleports. Either way, you must decide between active Fire Strike kills and click-intensive Curse splashing.

Minimum requirements:

  • Any F2P account with access to the standard spellbook (default).
  • Level 13 Magic for Fire Strike or level 19 Magic for Curse.
  • Runes: mind runes for Fire Strike; body runes and water runes for Curse. Air/fire/water runes are free with the right elemental staff.
  • An elemental staff — staff of fire for Fire Strike, staff of water for Curse.
  • Full metal armour (platebody, platelegs, kiteshield, full helm) to tank magic accuracy when curse splashing.
  • A safespot or trapped monster. Dark wizards are a classic target for both methods.

Why Train to 55 Magic in Free-to-Play?

Level 55 Magic is the unlock requirement for High Level Alchemy, a members-only spell that is one of the most popular money-making methods in OSRS. Many free players grind to 55 before buying membership so they can start alching immediately without wasting member time on low-level magic. If you plan to stay F2P, level 55 is largely a personal milestone because F2P teleports stop at Falador (level 37). That said, a higher Magic level improves your magic defence and unlocks stronger combat spells, so there is still value for pure F2P accounts.

Skip 10 levels for free: Complete Imp Catcher (875 Magic XP) and Witch's Potion (325 Magic XP). Together they give 1,200 XP, enough to go from level 1 straight to level 10 before you cast a single spell.

Fire Strike vs Curse Splashing: How They Work

Both methods generate Magic XP, but they use radically different mechanics. Fire Strike is a combat spell that deals damage, so you gain Magic XP plus a small amount of Hitpoints XP. Curse is a debuff that reduces an enemy's Defence by 5%, and it gives flat Magic XP per cast regardless of whether it lands. That means Curse splashing gives no Hitpoints XP, which matters for pure accounts.

Fire Strike Safespotting

From level 13 Magic, you can cast Fire Strike. With a staff of fire equipped, the fire rune cost is eliminated, leaving only one mind rune per cast (currently 3 gp on the GE). You autocast Fire Strike from behind an obstacle, so the monster cannot reach you. Dark wizards are popular because they have low Magic defence, drop runes and talismans, and are easy to safespot. Other options include cows (early levels), guards, or any high-hitpoints monster you can trap.

Curse Splashing

Curse is unlocked at level 19 Magic and requires body runes plus water runes. With a staff of water, the water rune is free. To splash, you wear full metal armour to push your Magic attack bonus to -64 or lower, guaranteeing every cast fails. You then trap a monster in a building or behind an obstacle so it cannot reach you, and manually click Curse on it repeatedly. Each failed cast still gives the full 29 XP, making the method fast but extremely click-intensive.

XP and cost figures are estimates based on community-reported rates and current GE prices. Always verify on the wiki before committing to a large supply purchase.

Supplies, Rune Costs, and Budget

Runes can be bought from Aubury's Rune Shop in Varrock or from the Grand Exchange. Shop prices are often cheaper than the GE, but stock is limited. Crafting runes is slow unless you already have a high Runecraft level, and killing monsters for runes is inconsistent. The following GE prices are taken from the wiki research pack: air rune 6 gp, water rune 6 gp, earth rune 6 gp, fire rune 6 gp, mind rune 3 gp. Store prices are 4 gp each (or 4.30 gp from rune packs) and mind runes 3 gp (or 3.30 gp from mind packs).

Fire Strike costs exactly 3 gp per cast with a staff of fire — one mind rune. Curse splashing costs body runes (whose price is not listed in the research pack) plus a water rune, which is free with a water staff. Body runes are typically bought from Betty's Magic Emporium in Port Sarim or the GE, and their price fluctuates. Expect Curse to be slightly more expensive per cast than Fire Strike, but the higher XP rate may reduce total supply cost.

Verify before you buy: Rune prices change often. Check the live GE or the wiki's exchange page for current body rune and mind rune prices before stocking up for a full 1–55 push.

Fire Strike Safespotting in Detail

This is the classic F2P Magic training method. Start with cows in Lumbridge using Wind Strike until level 13, then switch to Fire Strike. Cows are safe, and you can collect cowhides for profit. After level 13, move to dark wizards. The Varrock stone circle and the area south of the bank are common safespots, but exact locations change with crowds. Dark wizards have low Magic defence and drop runes, talismans, and coins, which can offset some mind rune costs.

Fire Strike gives a higher base XP than earlier strike spells, and you also gain 2 XP per point of damage dealt. That means average XP per cast is around 25-28, but overkill and misses reduce efficiency. Training on monsters with more hitpoints reduces wasted overkill damage. Expect roughly 10k-15k XP per hour depending on your target, gear, and how actively you click. This method is semi-AFK because autocast handles the spell, but you must click a new monster after each kill.

Cost per hour is low. At 800-1,000 casts per hour, you spend 2,400-3,000 gp on mind runes. Drops may recover a chunk of that, especially if you pick up talismans and sell them. For accounts that also want Hitpoints XP or low-effort training, Fire Strike is the stronger choice.

Curse Splashing in Detail

Curse splashing is a pure Magic XP method. You must first obtain -64 or lower Magic attack bonus. The standard F2P setup is full iron or steel armour (platebody, platelegs, kiteshield, full helm) plus a water staff. The water staff provides unlimited water runes, while the armour tanks your accuracy. Then find a safespot where a monster is trapped. Common F2P splashing locations include dark wizards in Varrock buildings or monks near the Edgeville Monastery, but spots can be patched or crowded. Check the wiki's Free-to-play Magic training page for current safe spots.

Curse gives 29 Magic XP per cast, even when it splashes. Because you never deal damage, there is no overkill waste and no Hitpoints XP. However, Curse cannot be autocast — you must manually click the spell on the monster every single time. Good players sustain 800-1,200 casts per hour, yielding 23k-35k XP per hour. That is significantly faster than Fire Strike, but it demands constant attention. This is not an AFK method.

Cost is driven entirely by body runes. Curse requires two body runes per cast (verify exact rune cost on the wiki), and water runes are free. If body runes cost 3-5 gp each, that's 6-10 gp per cast, or 6,000-12,000 gp per hour. Cheaper than many members' methods, but more expensive per hour than Fire Strike. The time saved may justify the cost if you value speed over gp.

Curse splashing is not AFK. Many players assume "splashing" means you can walk away. You cannot — every cast requires a manual click. If you stop clicking, you stop gaining XP. Also do not wear magic gear while splashing, or your Curse will land and you'll waste the negative accuracy setup.

Time & Cost Tradeoffs: Which Is Actually Faster?

Level 1 to 55 requires 166,636 total Magic XP. If you complete the two free quests, you start at level 10, leaving 165,436 XP to train. From there, Fire Strike on dark wizards at 12k XP/hr takes roughly 13-14 hours. Curse splashing at 30k XP/hr takes about 5.5 hours, but that's 5.5 hours of non-stop clicking.

Fire Strike is cheaper per hour (around 2,500 gp) and more forgiving, while Curse is faster but more expensive and more mentally draining. Account goals matter: if you want a pure with no Hitpoints XP, Curse is your only option among these two. If you want combat XP and semi-AFK training, Fire Strike wins. If you just want 55 Magic as fast as possible and don't mind clicking, Curse splashing is the meta.

Supplies for Fire Strike from 13 to 55 might cost around 35k-45k gp in mind runes, while Curse splashing could cost 35k-70k gp in body runes depending on current prices. Both are affordable, but buying gold can remove the early-game moneymaking grind. Common Mistakes When Training 1–55 Magic

  • Skipping quests. Imp Catcher and Witch's Potion give nearly half the XP to level 10. Do them first.
  • Not using an elemental staff. Fire staff saves fire runes for Fire Strike, water staff saves water runes for Curse. Without one, your rune cost doubles or triples.
  • Using Fire Strike on high Magic defence monsters. Magic accuracy ignores Defence level but still checks Magic level and Magic defence bonus. Dark wizards and lesser demons are good; black knights are not.
  • Overkilling low-hitpoints monsters. Cows have 8 HP, so a single Fire Strike often kills them, wasting half the damage XP. Move to dark wizards or guards soon after level 13.
  • Thinking Curse splashing is fully AFK. It requires a click every 2-3 seconds. If you need to walk away, use Fire Strike autocast at a safespot instead.
  • Wearing magic gear while splashing. That raises your accuracy and makes Curse land, which stops the method. Always use full metal armour.
  • Buying runes from the GE without comparing shop prices. Shops carry stock at fixed prices; if you don't mind waiting for restocks, you can save gold.

Practical Next Steps & Marketplace Option

Start by knocking out Imp Catcher and Witch's Potion. Then buy a fire staff, a water staff, a stack of mind runes, and some body runes. Train on cows with Wind Strike until level 13, then test Fire Strike on dark wizards. If you find the XP too slow or you want pure Magic, switch to Curse splashing at level 19.

If your bank is low and you don't want to grind for rune money, buying OSRS gold is a legitimate shortcut for supplies. It lets you stock up on runes and gear without spending hours collecting cowhides or chopping yew logs. Just be sure to use a safe marketplace and never share your password. Frequently asked questions

Is Fire Strike or Curse splashing faster for 1–55 Magic?

Curse splashing is faster if you click constantly, averaging 23k–35k XP/hr compared to Fire Strike's 10k–15k XP/hr. However, Fire Strike is semi-AFK and gives Hitpoints XP. Your choice depends on whether you value speed or lower attention.

What quests should I do before training Magic in F2P?

Complete Imp Catcher and Witch's Potion. Together they give 1,200 Magic XP, enough to jump from level 1 to level 10 without casting any spells. This saves time and runes at the very start.

How much does Fire Strike cost per cast?

With a staff of fire equipped, Fire Strike costs only one mind rune per cast. Mind runes are 3 gp on the Grand Exchange, so each cast costs 3 gp. Your only other cost is the one-time purchase of the fire staff.

Can I splash Curse in free-to-play?

Yes. Curse is a free-to-play spell that works for splashing. You need level 19 Magic, a water staff, body runes, and full metal armour to get -64 or lower Magic attack. Then cast Curse on a trapped monster and it will always splash, still giving full XP.

What gear do I need for Curse splashing?

You need a water staff to supply unlimited water runes, plus full metal armour (platebody, platelegs, kiteshield, full helm) to lower your Magic attack to -64 or below. Do not wear any mage gear or amulet of magic, because that raises accuracy.

Does Fire Strike give Hitpoints XP?

Yes, Fire Strike is a combat spell, so you gain Hitpoints XP from the damage you deal. Curse splashing gives no Hitpoints XP, making it the preferred method for pure accounts that want to avoid training Hitpoints.

Should I buy gold to fund runes for Magic training?

Buying gold is an option if you want to skip early money-making. Rune costs for 1–55 are modest (under 100k), but buying gold can let you stock up instantly. Always use a safe marketplace and verify current prices before purchasing.
