Ultimate Ironman melee training is less about finding the best monster and more about solving the bankless inventory puzzle. Every piece of food, every potion, and every loot drop has to justify its place in your inventory, because you cannot stash anything away. The classic answer — park at crabs until 70, then shelter in Nightmare Zone — is still the backbone, but a persistent community idea is that organised crime can offer early Strength levels without ever touching a bank. This guide compares that claim against the methods that are well documented in the Old School RuneScape wiki, using multiple training pages to give you a realistic, bankless path from level 1 to 70+ melee.

We pulled facts from Ultimate Ironman Guide/Melee, Pay-to-play Melee training, Agility training, Barbarian Training, Construction training, and Defence training. Where the research pack does not cover organised crime, we say so explicitly and tell you to verify on the wiki before sinking hours into it.

Who this guide is for — and what you need before you start

This guide is written for Ultimate Ironman accounts that want to raise Attack, Strength, and Defence without banking. It assumes you have membership, because every method discussed here is members-only. You do not need maxed stats or expensive gear; you do need patience for questing and a willingness to manage a small inventory for hours at a time.

Requirements snapshot: membership, access to Crabclaw Caves via The Depths of Despair, and a plan for quest XP. If you are below 40 Defence, bring food until you can wear rune or better.

  • Questing foundation: complete the early melee quests listed below before grinding crabs.
  • Crab access: Sand crabs in Hosidius have no requirements but are crowded. Crabclaw Caves requires The Depths of Despair. Ammonite crabs on Fossil Island require Bone Voyage. Gemstone crabs in Varlamore require Children of the Sun and partial Twilight's Promise for quetzal access.
  • Nightmare Zone: unlock multiple quest bosses and budget a coin fee for each dream.
  • Agility support: even a modest agility level helps you reset crab aggression faster and reach shortcuts. Early agility can be skipped with quests like The Tourist Trap, Recruitment Drive, The Depths of Despair, and The Grand Tree.
  • Organised crime: not covered in the supplied research pack; verify on the wiki before using it as your primary method.

If you are still below level 40 Attack, do not train blind. The quest XP route below will get you most of the way, and you will hit harder from the very first crab.

The early-game questing route: skip the first 30 levels

Early melee levels are painfully slow, and a UIM has no bank to store junk food or better weapons. The smart move is to let quest XP carry you. Several novice quests give large Attack and Strength rewards, and many of their bosses can be safespotted with Magic, so low combat stats are not a barrier.

  • Witch's House — 6,325 Hitpoints experience. Complete first for a safety margin.
  • Waterfall Quest — 13,750 Attack and 13,750 Strength experience. No requirements, but 17 Hitpoints is recommended so you cannot be one-hit.
  • Fight Arena — 12,175 Attack experience. Bosses can be safespotted with Magic.
  • Tree Gnome Village — 11,450 Attack experience. Khazard Warlord can be safespotted or flinched.
  • Vampyre Slayer — 4,825 Attack experience. Count Draynor is trivial with a few combat stats.
  • Death Plateau — 3,000 Attack experience. Also unlocks climbing boots, an early strength bonus boot.
  • The Grand Tree — 18,400 Attack experience. Check requirements; the black demon can be safespotted.
  • Holy Grail — 15,300 Defence experience. Requires 20 Attack and completion of Merlin's Crystal.

Tip: Complete Witch's House first for the Hitpoints cushion, then Waterfall Quest. After that, you will have enough Attack to wield an adamant or rune weapon immediately.

According to Pay-to-play Melee training, completing the recommended early quests grants a total of 61,775 Attack, 20,375 Strength, and 15,300 Defence experience. That alone gets you to around 45 Attack, 34 Strength, and 31 Defence without a single crab kill.

Crab training: the low-input UIM staple

Once your quest foundation is done, crabs become the backbone of melee training for Ultimate Ironmen. They have very low offensive and defensive stats, so you can wear high strength bonus gear without worrying about defence. The key mechanic is aggression: crabs will attack you for 10 minutes when you walk near, then stop. To reset, simply run far enough away and return. Stand in a spot where at least three crabs are aggressive to minimise downtime.

Ammonite crabs on Fossil Island are the best overall choice. They have the highest Hitpoints of all crabs, and their occasional fossil drops can be stored in the Fossil Storage for later Prayer training or Volcanic Mine access. You must complete Bone Voyage to reach Fossil Island.

Sand crabs in Hosidius require nothing and are fine for very early levels, but they are crowded and have lower Hitpoints. If you have completed The Depths of Despair, you can kill them in the Crabclaw Caves near the Woodcutting Guild, which is usually less crowded.

Gemstone crabs in Varlamore appear after Children of the Sun. They have infinite health, low Defence, and only burrow every 10 minutes. You can re-engage with two clicks. They give 87.5% of normal experience per hit, but because there is no overkill loss or downtime, they are competitive. You can also mine them for gems if you are one of the 16 players who dealt the most damage.

Tip: Use a dragon battleaxe special attack to boost your Strength before settling in at crabs. The accuracy loss is negligible against crabs because their Defence is so low, and the extra max hit speeds up XP.

Once you have around 40 Defence and wear rune or better, you should not need food at crabs. Carry only a weapon, armour, and maybe a few pieces of food for safety if your Defence is lower.

The organised crime option: what the wiki research pack does not tell us

The topic angle asks for organised crime as a no-bank early Strength method, but after checking the supplied research extracts — Ultimate Ironman Guide/Melee, Pay-to-play Melee training, Agility training, Barbarian Training, Construction training, and Defence training — none of them include a section on organised crime. That does not mean organised crime is bad; it means we cannot responsibly quote rates, spawns, or reward mechanics from this pack. Players who want to compare organised crime must open the dedicated wiki page for Organised Crime and check current mechanics, experience rewards, and whether it truly avoids banking for UIMs. Do not build a training plan around it based on forum hearsay.

Warning: Verify organised crime on the wiki before committing. The research pack for this guide does not include its details, so any numbers you see elsewhere may be for normal accounts or outdated.

Unlocking Nightmare Zone for no-supply combat XP

At higher melee levels, the Nightmare Zone becomes the most AFK-friendly combat training in the game. The Ultimate Ironman Guide/Melee states that a normal customisable rumble with absorption potions allows you to stay in combat for 20 minutes without any player input. That is huge for a UIM because you can alt-tab or play another account while your character fights.

There are two catches: NMZ dreams require a coin fee to start, and the minigame does not allow activities that need a lot of inventory space. For a UIM, coins are not banked, so you must carry them or generate them on the spot. Absorption potions can be purchased with NMZ points, but you need to earn those points first. Overloads are also useful for boosting stats, but they are not required for the AFK absorption method.

Pay-to-play Melee training lists Nightmare Zone as a viable method from level 60 onwards, with obsidian armour and a berserker necklace as optimal gear for Strength training. However, those items are difficult for an early UIM to obtain. You can start NMZ with basic gear and prayer potions or absorption potions, but the best AFK rates come when your stats are already in the 70s.

Info: Nightmare Zone is AFK but not free: budget coins for the dream fee and inventory for absorption potions if you plan to stay for long sessions.

Side-by-side comparison: crabs vs NMZ vs organised crime

The table below summarises the key tradeoffs for a bankless UIM. It uses only facts that appear in the provided research pages; organised crime is marked as verify because it is not covered.

MethodRequirementsAttentionSupply intensityUIM inventory notes
Sand crabs (Hosidius)NoneLow (reset every 10 min)Minimal food after 40 DefenceCarry minimal supplies; can alch drops if any
Ammonite crabs (Fossil Island)Bone VoyageLowMinimalStore fossils for later Prayer or Volcanic Mine
Gemstone crabs (Varlamore)Children of the SunLowNo food needed due to infinite healthCan mine gems for profit
Nightmare ZoneMultiple quest bosses, coin feeVery low (20 min AFK)Absorption potions, optional overloadsNeed coins and potions in inventory
Organised crime (verify)Not in supplied researchUnknownUnknownReported no-bank viability; verify thoroughly

For most UIMs, crabs remain the best low-level option because they require almost no supplies and no coin fee. NMZ becomes attractive after 60–70 stats when you want to AFK for long stretches. Organised crime remains a question mark until you check its dedicated wiki page.

Common mistakes that waste UIM melee hours

Even with a solid plan, many Ultimate Ironmen sabotage their own progress through small inventory or positioning errors. These are the most frequent ones I see from the wiki pages and community discussions.

  • Skipping quests and grinding from level 1. You lose hours and waste food you could have saved.
  • Resetting crab aggression incorrectly. Running too short a distance and coming back means the crabs remain unaggressive. Run well beyond the minimap edge, then return.
  • Standing where only one or two crabs can reach you. You want at least three aggressive crabs so there is always a target.
  • Carrying unnecessary inventory items. After 40 Defence you rarely need food at crabs; keep your inventory light so you can pick up fossils or alchables.
  • Starting Nightmare Zone too early. If you have not unlocked enough bosses or are below 60 stats, you will get poor XP and waste coins.
  • Trusting organised crime without checking the wiki. Anecdotes from normal accounts may not apply to UIM restrictions.
  • Ignoring strength bonus. At crabs, accuracy is already high, so prioritise strength bonus over attack bonus.

Info: Most UIM melee inefficiency comes from inventory management, not from the monster you choose. Pack light, bank nothing, and reset aggression on schedule.

Time and cost tradeoffs for UIM

The Ultimate Ironman Guide/Melee suggests using crabs from level 1 to 70 or even 99, then switching to Nightmare Zone for the most AFK-friendly high-level training. The time tradeoff is real: crabs are slower per hour but cost no coins and require almost no supplies, while NMZ is faster and more AFK but costs a coin fee and consumes absorption potions or prayer potions. For a UIM, coins are harder to come by because you cannot sell bulk loot on the Grand Exchange. You will have to alch drops or use other money-making methods that fit a bankless lifestyle.

Agility plays a supporting role. Early agility levels can be skipped with quests like The Tourist Trap, Recruitment Drive, The Depths of Despair, and The Grand Tree; this gets you to about level 33 without training. Higher agility helps you run farther when resetting crab aggression and makes travel to Fossil Island less annoying. Barbarian Training unlocks barehanded fishing and other conveniences, but it is optional for melee.

If you are patient and broke, crabs are the honest choice. If you value your real-life attention more than in-game gold, NMZ is worth unlocking as soon as you can afford the fees. Avoid making a decision based on theoretical organised crime rates until you have verified them yourself on the wiki.

Info: AFK time has value. If NMZ saves you five hours of active crab clicking, the coin fee is probably worth it. But if you are still building a cash stack, crabs are free.

Practical next step: a week-long UIM melee plan

Here is a concrete, bankless route you can follow right now. It assumes you have membership and a few hours a day.

  • Day 1: Complete Witch's House, Waterfall Quest, Fight Arena, Tree Gnome Village, Vampyre Slayer, and Death Plateau in that order. If you already have some Agility, add The Grand Tree and Holy Grail later.
  • Day 2–3: Train at sand crabs. If you have completed The Depths of Despair, go to Crabclaw Caves; otherwise, use the Hosidius shore. Use a dragon battleaxe special attack every time you reset aggression.
  • Day 4–5: Complete Bone Voyage if you can, then move to ammonite crabs on Fossil Island. Bring a few pieces of food until you are comfortable, then drop them for inventory space.
  • Day 6: Open the Organised Crime wiki page and compare its requirements and XP to your crab rates. If it looks competitive for your stats and you can reach it without banking, test it for one hour. If not, stay at crabs.
  • Day 7: Once your Attack and Strength are both 60+, start unlocking Nightmare Zone bosses. Run a normal rumble with absorption potions and see how long you can AFK. Continue until 70 Attack for the abyssal whip, then reassess.

Prerequisites for the week: membership, ability to complete several novice quests, and 40 Defence or willingness to bring food. A modest agility level helps but is not required.

Frequently asked questions

Can I train melee on a UIM without doing any quests?

Yes, but it is inefficient. You will spend hours at crabs with a bronze or iron weapon when a few quests could have given you 40+ Attack and a rune weapon.

Is organised crime actually better than crabs for early Strength?

The supplied research pack does not cover organised crime, so we cannot confirm. Check the Organised Crime page on the wiki and compare its melee XP, requirements, and whether it truly avoids banking for UIMs.

How do I reset crab aggression?

Run at least 10–15 tiles away, far enough that the crabs lose interest, then return. Some players run to the edge of the minimap and back. Make sure you stand where at least three crabs are aggressive when you return.

What stats do I need for Nightmare Zone?

There is no hard level requirement, but Pay-to-play Melee training lists NMZ as viable from the 60s onward. You also need to complete quests that unlock bosses; the more bosses, the better the options for a customisable rumble.

Do I need food for crab training?

Once you have around 40 Defence and wear rune or better, you usually do not need food. Lower Defence players should bring a few pieces of food and carry them until you can sustain without.

How does the dragon battleaxe special attack help at crabs?

It boosts your Strength level, increasing your max hit. Because crabs have very low Defence, the accuracy reduction from the special attack is negligible, so overall XP per hour goes up.

What's the biggest inventory mistake UIMs make?

Carrying too many supplies or loot. A UIM should keep the inventory almost empty at crabs so you can pick up fossils or alchables without juggling. Reset aggression, not your inventory slots.
